Ah! The feeling of standing out in the waders in the fast-flowing stream and casting the ole fly rod upstream and lazing away the afternoon hoping for the catch of the day....a nice big rainbow trout. We are not talking the old-school bait fishing here either, but the art of fly-fishing. To the fly-fisherman, there is no feeling like seeing that river running prey lured in by one of his or her own hand made flies. The recreational or pro fly-fisherman knows that when the fish is fighting against the line, there can be no greater satisfaction then realizing his own fly creation is what brought him in.
So why not just go to the local sporting goods and purchase your own artificial flies? Why all the interest in casting out one of your own hand-made creations to entice the strike of the bass? Basically, it comes down to the idea most people like to see something they have fashioned with their own hands become functional and successful.
One of the facets to remember about this hobby is that fish are not stupid. They know what a particular fly looks like and how it behaves in the flowing water. So part of the art of fly tying is making sure what you make looks like that particular insect. Creating something that looks like a mangled blob probably will not interest the fish.
Tying flies is as basic as knowing how to properly fashion and combine the head, body and wings. There really is not a lot needed to become adept at tie flying. In fact, equipment needed for this hobby is inexpensive to purchase. From the vise to the various feathers, hackles and animal fur; and even the thread, the price for getting into this hobby is nominal. Obviously, like anything else, fly-tying has the potential to grow into more cost as one becomes proficient and goes on to purchase more materials but the pay-off is incredible.
There are very few other hobbies that allow for the need of a small workspace to concentrate in.
Fly-tying is a craft that requires patience and dexterity; however, it soon becomes addictive. This recreation also allows for a greater knowledge of knowing what flies work and which ones do not in different fishing environments.
Fly-tying is not just a hobby to the fishing enthusiast... it is also an incredible learning experience.
